In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology. It is a series of procedures used to assist with the conception of a baby. During IVF, mature eggs are collected from a woman’s ovaries and fertilised with sperm under laboratory conditions.
The fertilised eggs are monitored in a lab for several days until embryos form. The embryos are then transferred to the uterus to grow and develop.

The IVF Process
Prior to your IVF cycle, you and your partner will undergo a detailed evaluation to assess the health of your ovaries, uterus, and quality of semen. This thorough evaluation helps our fertility experts plan a tailormade IVF treatment that will best suit your situation. An IVF cycle can be broken down into the following steps or procedures.
At the start of your IVF cycle, the ovaries are stimulated with a course of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce a greater number of eggs (as opposed to a single egg produced during a menstrual cycle). You will undergo routine ultrasound scans and blood tests to monitor the development of your follicles that produce eggs. The doctor will schedule the egg retrieval procedure once the eggs are ready for collection.
The egg retrieval procedure is a minor minimally invasive procedure done that involves no stitches or cuts. You will be given general anaesthesia to prepare for the procedure. The eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using a fine needle or catheter that is inserted through the vagina under ultrasound guidance (transvaginal ultrasound). Multiple eggs may be harvested as not all eggs can be successfully fertilised.
The male partner is also required to provide a semen sample on the day of the egg retrieval procedure.
After the egg retrieval, fertilisation can be done in the following ways:
Conventional insemination – Harvested eggs are placed in a dish with sperm and incubated overnight for fertilisation to occur.
ICSI – A single healthy sperm is injected directly into each mature egg to promote fertilisation. This method is used when there is an issue with quality of semen such as low sperm count or low sperm motility.
Additional procedures such as assisted laser hatching, and preimplantation genetic testing may also be recommended depending on you and your partners health.
The cultured embryos can then be transferred into the uterus to achieve a pregnancy or be frozen to be used in a later cycle (embryo freezing and frozen embryo transfer).
The cultured embryos (fertilised eggs) are monitored carefully to identify viable embryos. Once the desired growth is achieved, the doctor will transfer the embryos into your uterus using a long, thin flexible tube (catheter). This procedure is usually painless; you may be given a mild sedative in case of discomfort.
You will be required to take a pregnancy test 12-14 days after the embryo transfer. The next steps are further planned based on the results.
