Electroejaculation and Ancillary Services

Electroejaculation and Ancillary services at
Birla Fertility & IVF

Electroejaculation is used to effectively obtain sperm for fertility treatments like IUI and IVF if the male partner is unable to provide a semen sample through ejaculation.

At Birla Fertility & IVF, we offer electroejaculation and ancillary services including a complete range of surgical sperm retrieval procedures.

Why Electroejaculation?

Electroejaculation is useful for patients who are unable to ejaculate for reasons including:

Spinal cord injury

Physiological issues

Psychological problems

Electroejaculation process

Electroejaculation is a day-care procedure done under general anaesthesia. It is performed on an empty bladder and involves inserting a special probe attached to a portable stimulator into the rectum. When switched on, the probe causes ejaculation, and the semen is collected and prepared for the fertility treatment (IUI, IVF or cryopreservation). For patients with retrograde ejaculatory disorder (when semen travels into the bladder instead of being expelled from the tip of the penis during ejaculation), a catheter is inserted into the bladder through the urethra to collect any sperm that moves into the bladder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common male sexual disorders include premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

The patient is given general anaesthesia during the procedure and will not feel any pain

Patients can expect slight discomfort in the penis, testicles, or rectum for a few days after the procedure. This is generally managed with over-the-counter painkillers. A course of antibiotics may be prescribed to minimise the risk of infection.

If electroejaculation is not effective for collecting adequate amount of sperm for treatments like IUI, IVF or IVF-ICSI, surgical sperm retrieval procedures like TESA, PESA, TESE and micro-TESE are recommended. These surgical sperm retrieval procedures are known to be very effective for harvesting sperm from male patients with mild to severe male factor infertility.
