Micro TESE Treatment in India

Absence of sperm in semen can cause worry, as it can make pregnancy difficult. Also, in many cases, the issue is not the complete absence of sperm production but the inability of sperm to reach the semen. This is where Micro TESE has changed the way male infertility is approached. In India, Micro TESE is now available at advanced fertility centres with experienced specialists and modern lab support. The procedure is designed to carefully search for even a few healthy sperm directly from the testes, which can then be used for IVF treatment. For couples who have been trying for a pregnancy without success, this option offers a real possibility.

What is Micro TESE?

Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction, also called Micro TESE, is a specialised surgical procedure used to find sperm in men with very low or no sperm in their semen - a condition known as azoospermia.

Unlike older techniques, Micro TESE uses a high-powered operating microscope. This allows the surgeon to identify tiny areas within the testes that are more likely to produce sperm. Instead of removing large amounts of tissue, only selected areas are examined, which helps improve sperm retrieval while reducing damage.

When is Micro TESE Recommended?

Micro TESE is an advanced procedure and is usually advised when a doctor cannot detect any sperm in the semen despite multiple tests. In many cases, this occurs due to extremely low production of sperm in the testes or the sperm is not able to reach semen naturally.

The following conditions may require Micro TESE:

  • Repeated semen analysis reports showing zero sperm count
  • Non-obstructive azoospermia
  • Previous failed sperm retrieval procedures
  • Hormone test results suggest reduced sperm production
  • Conditions like Klinefelter syndrome or testicular damage

Advantages of Micro TESE Technique

Micro TEST utilises a high-powered microscope to identify areas in the testes that are more likely to contain sperm. This avoids removing tissue randomly, thus offering better precision than older sperm retrieval techniques.

The following are some of the key advantages of Micro TESE

  • It offers higher chances of sperm retrieval in non-obstructive azoospermia cases.
  • There is minimal removal of testicular tissue, which helps protect healthy areas
  • There is a lower risk of damage as compared to conventional techniques
  • Effective in complex cases including those having previous failed sperm retrieval attempts
  • It can help couples proceed with IVF and ICSI using their own biological sperm
  • Retrieved sperm can be frozen for future IVF cycles if required

Micro TESE has helped many couples facing severe male infertility issues achieve pregnancy. When done under the supervision of experienced specialists, it offers better outcomes.

Approach of Micro TESE Treatment

Micro TESE is not a standalone technique but is a part of a larger fertility treatment plan. It is suggested in cases of severe male infertility where sperm is absent in semen, thus making it challenging to conceive. Once sperm are retrieved using micro-TESE, with the help of ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection), the healthiest one is injected directly into the egg to improve chances of fertilisation. The female partner usually undergoes IVF alongside, so that eggs are ready at the time of sperm retrieval or preserved if needed.

Success Rates of Micro TESE Procedure

The success of the micro-TESE procedure depends on the cause of the condition. For instance, in cases of non-obstructive azoospermia, sperm retrieval rates can range between 40% to 60%. In the case of Klinefelter syndrome, it ranges between 21–72%. Once sperm are retrieved, the chances of pregnancy depend on IVF factors such as egg quality and embryo development. It is important to understand that while Micro TESE improves the chances of finding sperm, it does not guarantee pregnancy in every case.
