IUI Treatment (Intrauterine Insemination) : Step-by-Step Process, Costing & Case Studies

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI Treatment). The aim of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is to respect the natural environment of the gametes as much as possible, thus favouring fertilisation. This technique consists of depositing a semen sample, which has been prepared in advance in the laboratory, inside the woman’s uterus in order to increase the potential of the spermatozoa and improve the chances of the egg being fertilised.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI Treatment)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a simple, minimally invasive fertility treatment designed to work in harmony with the body’s natural reproductive process. The aim of IUI is to increase the chances of fertilisation by placing carefully prepared, high-quality sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation. This short, outpatient procedure brings the sperm closer to the egg, improving the likelihood of pregnancy while keeping conception as natural as possible.

What is IUI and When is it Recommended?

IUI treatment involves collecting a semen sample from a partner or donor, which is then washed and processed in our laboratory to select the healthiest, most active sperm. These sperm are gently inserted into the uterus using a fine catheter around the time of ovulation. The procedure is quick, usually painless, and does not require anaesthesia. IUI is often combined with mild fertility medications to stimulate ovulation and precisely time insemination for the best possible outcome. IUI may be recommended if you: Have unexplained infertility Experience ovulation-related disorders Have mild male-factor infertility Have cervical factor infertility Are a single woman using donor sperm Are part of a same-sex female couple Are beginning fertility treatment and looking for a less invasive first step Your fertility specialist will carefully assess your medical history, test results, and reproductive goals before recommending IUI as part of a personalised treatment plan.

IUI vs IVF – What’s the Difference?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a less invasive and more affordable fertility treatment compared to In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). It is often used as a first treatment option for couples with unexplained infertility, as well as for single women, same-sex female couples, and individuals using donor sperm.

How IUI and IVF Work

In IUI, specially prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus, allowing fertilisation to occur naturally inside the body.
In IVF, eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory, where doctors closely monitor fertilisation and select the healthiest embryos before transferring one into the uterus.

Key Difference in the Process :

The main difference lies in where fertilisation happen inside the body in IUI, and outside the body in a controlled lab environment in IVF.

Success Rates & Treatment Approach

IUI generally has lower success rates than IVF, but it can still be effective depending on age and the cause of infertility. It works best when sperm quality is normal or only mildly reduced.

Recommended Number of Cycles :

Doctors often recommend trying IUI for 3 or more cycles, either consecutively or spaced out, before moving to IVF if needed.

Cost & Accessibility

IUI treatment is significantly more affordable than IVF, making it a more accessible first step for many individuals and couples beginning their fertility journey.
