Ovarian Cysts Treatment in India

Women may experience symptoms such as pelvic pain, bloating, abdominal discomfort, irregular menstrual cycles, or a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen at different stages of life. While these symptoms can occur for various reasons, they should not be ignored, especially when they persist or affect daily activities. Reproductive health conditions often develop silently and may go unnoticed until they begin causing discomfort or fertility-related concerns. Timely medical evaluation plays an important role in identifying the underlying cause and determining the most appropriate course of action. With advances in diagnostic techniques and treatment options, most gynaecological conditions can be effectively managed, helping women maintain their overall health, reproductive well-being, and quality of life.

What Are Ovarian Cysts?

An ovarian cyst is a small sac that forms on or inside one or both of your ovaries and is filled with fluid or semisolid substances. There are many different types of ovarian cysts, most of which are benign and painless. Ovarian cysts do not always cause symptoms. You most likely won't know you have one until your doctor finds one during a pelvic exam or pelvic ultrasound. Ovarian cysts can sometimes cause problems. By scheduling regular pelvic checks and talking to your doctor about any symptoms you may be experiencing, you can pinpoint any problems related to an ovarian cyst. Ovarian cysts are extremely common, especially in people who have not yet gone through menopause.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

The most common type of ovarian cyst is a functional cyst, which is unrelated to illness. They are brought on by ovulation. Your ovaries may be operating normally if these cysts are present. If left untreated, functional cysts often decrease with time, usually within 60 days. Simple cysts are another name for functioning cysts. They comprise:

  • Follicle cysts: A follicle, a tiny sac in your ovary, releases an egg every month as part of your menstrual cycle. If an egg is not released by the follicle, a follicular cyst develops. Rather, the follicle becomes a cyst when it fills with fluid.
  • Corpus luteum cysts: Following the discharge of an egg, the follicle develops into the corpus luteum, a tissue that produces hormones. The corpus luteum disintegrates if conception is unsuccessful. However, occasionally, rather than disintegrating, it fills with fluid and develops into a cyst.

Other ovarian cysts

Not every ovarian cyst develops in reaction to your menstrual cycle. Although they aren't necessarily indicators of illness, your doctor might want to keep an eye on them to make sure they don't lead to issues. Additional varieties of ovarian cysts consist of:

  • Cystadenomas: Your ovary's surface develops these cysts. They might be filled with a thicker, mucous-like fluid or a thinner, watery fluid.
  • Teratomas, or Dermoid Cysts: The cells found in dermoid cysts resemble the tissue found in your skin, hair, and teeth. They are noncancerous, rubbery, and smooth.
  • Endometriomas: Usually an indication of endometriosis, these cysts are filled with menstrual blood.
  • Cysts of Ovarian Cancer: Ovarian cancer cysts are solid masses of cancer cells, in contrast to the aforementioned disorders.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

The majority of ovarian cysts disappear on their own without causing any symptoms. However, a big ovarian cyst may result in:

  • Pelvic discomfort that fluctuates. One side of the area beneath your belly button may hurt sharply or dully.
  • Feeling of fullness, pressure, or weight in your abdomen.
  • Bloating

What Causes Ovarian Cysts?

The most common cause of ovarian cysts is ovulation. It occurs naturally as part of your menstrual cycle. Other reasons include of:

  • Dermoid cysts and cystadenomas can develop as a result of abnormal cell proliferation.
  • If you have extensive endometriosis, endometriomas, often known as chocolate cysts, frequently develop on your ovary.
  • PMOS stands for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. Your ovaries may develop several little cysts as a result of PMOS.
  • PID stands for pelvic inflammatory disease. Your ovaries may develop cysts as a result of severe pelvic infections.

How Are Ovarian Cysts Diagnosed?

Your doctor will first rule out pregnancy as the cause of your symptoms by giving you a pregnancy test. The following tests could then be used to identify an ovarian cyst:

  • Pelvic examination: Your doctor will examine your pelvis to feel for any changes or lumps.
  • Ultrasound: This imaging process creates images of your pelvic organs using sound waves. It can identify the sites of cysts on your ovaries as well as whether they are mostly solid or fluid.
  • Laparoscopy: This process is carried out in an operating room. In order to view your pelvic cavity and reproductive organs, your healthcare professional makes an incision (cut) in your abdomen. Your doctor can remove a cyst if they find one at this time.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Get immediate medical help if you have:

  • Sudden, severe abdominal or pelvic pain.
  • Pain with fever or vomiting.
  • Signs of shock. These include cold, clammy skin; rapid breathing; and lightheadedness or weakness.

Ovarian Cysts Treatment

Ovarian cyst medications

To stop ovulation and stop future cysts from forming, your doctor may prescribe hormone-containing medications (like birth control pills).

Ovarian cyst surgery

You could require surgery to remove a cyst if it is causing symptoms and growing larger. The size of the cyst and how it appears on the ultrasound determine the type of operation. Among the various methods employed are:

  • Laparoscopic Surgery: During this surgery, your doctor makes a tiny incision in your belly to install a tiny camera. They use the equipment to see your pelvis and reproductive organs. A provider can remove the ovarian cyst through tiny incisions (ovarian cystectomy).
  • Laparotomy: If the cyst is really big or if there are other issues, your doctor might do this treatment. It entails making a bigger abdominal incision.
Your doctor may speak with a gynecological oncologist or cancer expert about the best course of action for you if they suspect a malignant cyst.

When does an ovarian cyst need to be removed?

Specialists determine if they need to remove a cyst based on a few factors:

  • Cyst's size: Because larger cysts can cause discomfort, your doctor might advise removing a cyst larger than 10 cm.
  • Symptoms: If the cyst hurts you, interferes with your menstruation, or contributes to your inability to conceive, your doctor might advise its removal.
  • Suspicion of cancer: If there is any suspicion that a cyst is malignant, your doctor might wish to remove it, particularly if you have a higher risk of ovarian cancer.
  • Type of a cyst: After a few menstrual cycles, functional cysts usually disappear and remain small. Your doctor is more likely to advise removing other kinds of cysts because they grow larger and don't go away on their own.

In addition, your doctor will take into account your age, medical history, and desire to become pregnant. If you have any questions concerning the removal of an ovarian cyst, be sure to consult your provider.
