Hypospermia Treatment in India

Male infertility is as common as female infertility and has been on the rise. Hypospermia, or decreased semen volume, is one such prevalent male fertility issue. A male who has abnormally little semen volume is said to have hypospermia. Men with the condition known as hypospermia frequently generate abnormally little semen after ejaculation. Let’s check the details to understand the condition better.

What is Hypospermia?

A man is considered to have hypospermia by the World Health Organization (WHO) if the amount of semen he ejaculates is less than 1.5 mL. To make a diagnosis, a semen analysis must be done. The volume of the ejaculate, the quantity of spermatozoa, the motility of the sperm, and other parameters of semen are measured by this test.

The semen sample must be evaluated three to five days after sexual abstinence in order to provide the most precise diagnosis possible. To validate the condition, it is also advised to take a second or even a third sample. It is crucial to emphasize that ejaculating frequently (several times a day) might result in transient hypospermia and that this is not a sign of any medical condition.

Different Types of Hypospermia

You can majorly find two types of hypospermia, which include congenital and acquired. Let’s understand them better:

  • Congenital hyperspermia is present in one’s body from birth. It is characterised when one sees a huge volume of seminal fluid produced during ejaculation, which can sometimes affect fertility outcomes.
  • Acquired hyperspermia develops later in life. This can happen due to trauma, infection, or hormonal imbalances. It can also be caused due to anomalies in the vas deferens and seminal vesicles, which are an important part of the process that produces semen.

A number of diseases that affect the male reproductive system, including cancer, can also cause hypospermia. Understanding the different types and causes of hypospermia is essential to its diagnosis and treatment.

Symptoms of Hypospermia

Low semen volume, a significant symptom observed after ejaculation, is the main indicator of hypospermia. For many guys, this might be a visible change in the volume of the ejaculate. Typical symptoms include:

  • Reduced Semen: The main indicator of hypospermia is a noticeably less volume of semen during ejaculation. This decrease is frequently lower than the volume average, however it varies from person to person.
  • Variations in Semen Consistency: Individuals with hypospermia may notice variations in the consistency of their semen. This could include changes in thickness or viscosity.
  • Having Problems Getting Pregnant: Hypospermia may make it more difficult to conceive, even if it is not a direct cause of infertility. Reduced semen volume may have an impact on sperm motility and survival, which could affect the chance of fertilization.
  • Changes in Ejaculatory Sensation: Some individuals with hypospermia may experience changes in their ejaculatory sensations. This could be anything from the feeling of an unfinished or altered release to a clear emotion at the peak.
  • Semen Discoloration: In certain situations, the color of the semen may change. Even though semen is typically whitish-grey, variations in color could point to an underlying issue that is producing hypospermia.
  • Pain and Discomfort: Pain during ejaculation may be associated with hypospermia, especially if the condition is caused by infections or inflammatory conditions that affect the reproductive system.
  • Symptoms of Underlying Causes: Since hypospermia can be a secondary symptom of a number of diseases, people may also have symptoms related to the underlying cause. For example, the first indication of an infection could be vaginal pain, swelling, or discomfort.

Causes of Hypospermia

Numerous things can lead to hypospermia, such as:

  • Hormonal imbalance: The generation of semen can be impacted by hormonal abnormalities, especially low testosterone levels.
  • Obstructions: Semen volume can be decreased by reproductive system obstructions, such as vasectomy, blockages in the epididymis, or blockages in the vas deferens.
  • Infections: Semen production may be impacted by infections like prostatitis or epididymitis.
  • Drugs: Some drugs, such alpha-blockers, can lower the volume of semen.
  • Anatomical problems: Hypospermia can also result from anatomical problems such as retrograde ejaculation.
  • Drugs: Some medications, like those used to treat cancer, can have a detrimental effect on the production of semen.

How Does Low Semen Volume Affect Male Fertility?

Male fertility is impacted by low semen volume in a number of ways:

Reduced Sperm Production

A smaller total fluid volume results in fewer sperm being deposited close to the cervix with each ejaculate, even if sperm concentration is normal. This lowers the number of sperm that can reach and fertilize the egg.

Diminished Defense Against Vaginal Acidity

Sperm may find the naturally acidic environment of the vagina inhospitable. This acidity is counteracted by seminal fluid, making the journey to the cervix safer. Less buffering results from less semen, and more sperm are lost before they even start their voyage.

Reduced Total Sperm Count

Sperm concentration multiplied by semen volume yields the total sperm count. Even when the concentration per milliliter seems sufficient, a smaller volume immediately reduces this figure.

Inadequate Sperm Support

Sperm motility and survival duration are prolonged by the abundance of fructose, proteins, zinc, and enzymes found in seminal fluid. The availability of these vital nutrients is diminished by a smaller volume, which may have an impact on sperm motility and viability.

Diagnosis of Hypospermia

Healthcare professionals usually do a number of assessments in order to diagnose hypospermia:

  • Physical examination: A physical examination to evaluate reproductive and general health.
  • Semen analysis: An examination of the volume, motility, and sperm count of semen.
  • Hormone testing: Testing for hormone imbalances, including testosterone levels, is known as hormone testing.

These diagnostic techniques aid in figuring out the best course of treatment and identifying the underlying reasons of hypospermia. .

Hypospermia Treatment Options

The underlying cause of hypospermia (low semen volume) is determined via examination and semen analysis. Here are the most common treatment options suggested by your doctors for hypospermia:

Lifestyle Changes: Initially you can be asked to alter some changes in your routine like drinking 2-3 liters of water, keeping a healthy weight, doing yoga to lower stress levels, cutting off alcohol, and quitting smoking.

Medication: Medications for hormonal imbalances, infections, and ejaculation abnormalities can be suggested if the symptoms are manageable.

Fixing Underlying Conditions: Handling ailments that may impact semen volume, such as diabetes, prostate diseases, or obstructions in the reproductive canal.

Surgery: The last option is surgery to help restore monal semen flow in cases of ejaculatory duct occlusion or other anatomical anomalies.

Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART): When natural conception is difficult, treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be recommended.

How to Prevent Hypospermia?

There are many causes linked to lifestyle and behavioral factors when it comes to hypospermia. Doctors suggest that when these are addressed at the right time, the condition gets better without any surgical intervention. Here are how you can prevent hypospermia:

Go for a Balanced Diet to Maintain Weight

Increasing weight or obesity can have an impact on testosterone levels which in turn impacts the production of seminal fluid. This can be achieved by having a balanced diet and opting regular exercise.

Give up Smoking and Excessive Alcohol

The glands that produce semen are negatively impacted by both severe alcohol and smoking. Within a few months, making reductions or quitting entirely can result in observable gains.

Steer Clear of Recreational Drugs

These lower seminal fluid production and inhibit the generation of natural hormones. One of the most important things you can do for your reproductive health is to avoid them.

Avoid and Quickly Treat Infections

Reproductive tract scarring can result from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea and chlamydia. Long-term fertility is protected by timely therapy and safe sexual behavior.

Treat Chronic Illnesses

Retrograde ejaculation and decreased semen volume are frequently caused by poorly managed diabetes and hypertension. It's important to keep these situations under control.

Examine Your Prescription Drugs

Semen volume can be impacted by several blood pressure drugs, antidepressants, and antipsychotics. Before making any changes, consult your physician.

Minimise Stress and Steer Clear of Heat

Testosterone is suppressed by long-term stress. Tight clothing or extended exposure to heat from saunas can also impair glandular function. It is worthwhile to handle both.
