Cervical Cancer Overview

Cervical cancer originates in the cervix that is the lower part of the uterus and is connected to the vagina. It usually grows slowly, starting with precancerous changes known as dysplasia. It can be detected through regular screenings, the prominent one being the Pap smear test. Human papillomavirus (HPV)–a sexually transmitted infection is considered the prime cause of cervical cancer.

Various Stages of Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is classified into four main stages:

  • Stage 1: In stage 1 cervical cancer, the growth of abnormal cells is limited to the cervix only.
  • Stage 2: In stage 2 cervical cancer, cancereous cells have spread beyond the cervix but not to the pelvic wall or lower vagina.
  • Stage 3: Cancer has spread to the pelvic wall or lower part of the vagina in stage 3 of cervical cancer.
  • Stage 4: This is the last and most advanced stage in which the cancer has reached nearby organs or distant parts of the body. It is called as stage 4 cervical cancer.

Identifying the cervical cancer stage is vital to developing an effective treatment plan.

Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

The beginning stage of cervical cancer may not show any noticeable symptoms. However, as the cancer starts spreading, it may show the following visible signs.

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding (especially after intercourse)
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Lower back or leg pain in advanced stages

If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a cervical cancer clinic without delay.

Causes and Risk Factors of Cervical Cancer

Though HPV is believed to be the main cause of cervical cancer, the following are some of the factors that pose a significant risk.

  • Smoking
  • Early onset of sexual activity
  • Multiple sexual partners
  • Weakened immune system
  • Long-term use of oral contraceptives
  • Poor intimate hygiene

Regular screening and HPV vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer.

Cervical Cancer Vaccination Options

Prevention is the first step in fighting cervical cancer. HPV vaccination, ideally administered between the ages 9–26, can protect against high-risk HPV strains responsible for most cervical cancers. At Birla Fertility & IVF, we provide counselling and access to WHO-approved HPV vaccines as part of our preventive care programs.

Cost of cervical cancer vaccination

The two prominent vaccines available for the prevention of cervical cancer are Gardasil 4, which shields against four types of HPV strains and Gardasil 9, which shields against nine strains of HPV and therefore, offers broader protection. The cost of the cervical cancer vaccine in Lucknow is around ₹3,927 for Gardasil 4 and ₹10,850 for Gardasil 9. It varies based on factors such as dosage, the type of vaccine, and the healthcare facility, etc.

Cervical Cancer Treatment at Birla Fertility & IVF, Lucknow

We have some of the leading oncologists and gynaecologic surgeons in our team who deliver personalised cervical cancer treatment in Lucknow. They not only focus on treating cancer but also do their best to preserve the overall health and reproductive well-being of the individual.

Stage 1 Cervical Cancer Treatment

In early-stage cervical cancer, the goal is to remove the cancer while preserving reproductive health wherever possible:

  • Surgery: For very early cases, a cone biopsy may be sufficient to remove abnormal tissue while maintaining fertility. In cases with deeper invasion, a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be required. If you’re planning to have children in the future, our team will guide you through fertility-preserving options.
  • Radiotherapy: If surgery isn’t a viable option or if residual disease remains post-surgery, targeted radiation therapy is used to eliminate cancer cells while minimising damage to surrounding tissues.

Women diagnosed in Stage 1 who wish to preserve their fertility may be eligible for egg freezing prior to undergoing cancer treatment. This gives them the opportunity to plan for motherhood after recovery.

Advanced Stage Treatment (Stages 2–4)

For women with more advanced cervical cancer, our team uses an integrated treatment approach:

  • Radiotherapy & Chemotherapy: Often used together, this combination targets both the primary tumour and potential spread to nearby tissues or lymph nodes. This approach has been shown to significantly improve survival rates.
  • Targeted Therapy: In select cases, targeted drugs are used to block specific cancer cell growth signals, offering an advanced and often more tolerable treatment option.
  • Palliative Care: In cases where the disease is advanced and not curable, we focus on improving quality of life through symptom management, pain relief, and emotional support.

We also counsel patients on managing long-term effects of treatment, including the possibility of female infertility. Our reproductive experts offer fertility counselling and solutions like egg or embryo preservation before treatment starts.
