What is ICSI Treatment?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced approach that involves the selection of one healthy sperm, which is then directly injected into a mature egg inside the laboratory.

Different from standard IVF treatment, when the sperm and the egg are left to fertilise naturally in the lab setup, ICSI assists the fertilisation process by facilitating penetration of the egg by the sperm. This treatment method greatly enhances the possibility of fertilisation if sperm related issues are interfering with conception. After fertilisation, the embryo is observed in the laboratory before being implanted into the uterus.

Higher Fertilisation Rates

ICSI is most suited for cases where there are problems with male infertility, such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormally shaped sperm. Even when sperm quality is significantly compromised, successful fertilisation may still be possible.

Useful with Surgically Retrieved Sperm

If men do not have any sperm in their semen, a condition known as azoospermia, because of blockages or any other health problems, they can still have biological children. ICSI can be performed using sperm obtained through specialised surgical retrieval procedures like Micro-TESE. 

Reduced Risk of Fertilisation Failure

Since fertilisation takes place in a laboratory environment, the chances of fertilisation of the mature eggs are greater. This is particularly useful for couples who have failed fertilisation in previous rounds of IVF treatment.

Supports Genetic Testing

ICSI is commonly used when embryos are planned for preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). Facilitating controlled fertilisation, it helps support accurate genetic assessment before embryo transfer.

Enables Use of Frozen Sperm

It is possible to conduct ICSI using frozen and thawed sperm, especially in cases where there is a limited availability of viable sperm. This makes it a valuable option for fertility preservation and specific medical situations.

Diagnostic Tests Before ICSI Treatment

The following tests may be prescribed to the female partner: 

• Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) Test

• Infectious disease screening
• Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Test

For Men

The following tests may be prescribed to the male partner: 

• Semen analysis
• Hormonal assessment
• Genetic testing (when indicated)
• Infectious disease screening
• Sperm DNA fragmentation test (if required)

What Happens After ICSI Treatment?

Following embryo transfer, the waiting period can feel emotionally challenging.

During this phase:

• Hormonal medications may continue
• Mild cramping or spotting may occur
• Daily activities can usually be resumed
• Follow-up appointments may be scheduled
• A pregnancy blood test confirms treatment outcome

If pregnancy is achieved, further scans will be planned to monitor fetal development.
