What is a fallopian tube?

Fallopian tubes are female reproductive organs that connect the ovaries and the uterus and are found on each side of the uterus. During ovulation time, i.e., roughly in the middle of the monthly periods, the fallopian tubes transport an egg from the ovary to the uterus.

If sperm fertilises an egg, it travels via the tube to the uterus to be implanted, and conception takes place in the fallopian tube.

The channel for sperm to reach the eggs and the road back to the uterus for the fertilised egg is obstructed if a fallopian tube is closed. Scar tissue, infection, and pelvic adhesions are all common causes of obstructed fallopian tubes.

Symptoms of Blocked fallopian tubes

  • Infertility is frequently the first symptom of obstructed fallopian tubes. Even after trying for almost over a year, a woman does not get pregnant, your doctor will prescribe an X-ray of her fallopian tubes, as well as other basic reproductive testings, will be done
  • Lower abdominal pain and abnormal vaginal discharge are common symptoms of a blocked fallopian tube, however not every woman may have these symptoms. When a blockage occurs, the tube dilates (increases in diameter) and fills with fluid, this is known as hydrosalpinx. The fluid prevents fertilisation and pregnancy by blocking the egg and sperm

Causes of blocked fallopian tubes

The pelvic inflammatory disorder (PID) is the most common cause of clogged fallopian tubes. It is caused by a sexually transmitted infection, while not all infections in the pelvis are caused by STDs. A diagnosis of earlier PID or pelvic infection may raise chances of blocked tubes, even if PID is no longer present.

Some other possible causes of blocked fallopian tubes

  • Previous cases of abortion or miscarriage related to uterine infection
  • History of abdominal surgeries
  • Case of ectopic pregnancy
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids(Abnormal growth that develops in or around a woman’s uterus)
