What Are the Treatment Options for Peyronie’s Disease?
Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which a scar tissue known as plaque develops inside the penis which causes the penis to become curved, painful and shortened during erection. It also makes it difficult for men to achieve or maintain an erection. This disease can affect sexual function and cause emotional or relationship problems.
Treatment for Peyronie’s disease depends on several factors, including the extent of the curvature, pain, erectile function, duration of the disease, and whether the curvature has changed. Not everyone requires aggressive treatment. A urologist will evaluate your disease and recommend an approach based on your individual symptoms and goals.

Peyronie’s Disease Treatment Options
There is no single treatment that is suitable for everyone. The main treatment options for Peyronie’s disease include observation, medications, injections, traction therapy, and surgery.
1. Observation
For men whose curves are gradual, cause minimal pain, and have little impact on sexual function, aggressive treatment may not be necessary. Your urologist may recommend monitoring your condition, especially if your symptoms remain stable.
2. Medication
In certain cases, drug therapy for Peyronie’s disease may be considered, especially to reduce pain during the active phase. However, the drug does not reliably remove plaque or completely correct significant curvature. If discomfort occurs, your doctor may recommend painkillers. The choice depends on the person’s medical history and other medications.
3. Injection Treatment
Injection treatment for Peyronie’s disease involves injecting medication directly into the plaque. Some injection treatments can help reduce curvature and improve symptoms in appropriately selected patients. This approach is typically considered when the plaque and curvature meet certain clinical criteria. It should only be performed by a qualified urologist with experience in the procedure.
4. Penile Traction Therapy
A penis traction device stretches the penis in a gentle and controlled manner over a period of time. Treating penile curvature with traction may reduce the curvature or minimize loss of penile length in some men. The results depend on factors such as the severity of curvature, device use and treatment duration. A urologist can advise whether traction therapy is appropriate.
Steps in Peyronie’s Disease Treatment
When Is Peyronie’s Disease Surgery Considered?
Surgery for Peyronie’s disease is usually considered when the curvature is stable and significantly interferes with sexual intercourse or causes significant functional difficulties.
Common surgical approaches include:
Penile Folds
This surgery shortens the long side of the penis to correct the curvature. It is generally considered suitable for men with proper curvature and sufficient erectile function. A possible compromise is to reduce the length of the penis to some extent.
Plaque Incision or Excision With Grafting
In this approach, the surgeon makes an incision in or removes part of the plaque and places a graft to help restore a straighter penile shape. It may be considered for more complex or severe curvature, particularly when preserving penile length is an important consideration.
Penile Implant
A penile implant may be considered when Peyronie’s disease is accompanied by significant erectile dysfunction that does not respond adequately to other treatments. The implant can help with rigidity, while additional surgical techniques may be used to correct residual curvature when required.
