The Hidden Burden of Infertility in India – Akshat Seth

Infertility in itself feels like a burden that becomes difficult to bear. In India, there are 28 million couples with fertility issues, and less than 1% of them seek medical consultation and treatment for this condition.  Akshat Seth, CEO of CK Birla Healthcare, shared his views in a distinguished Newspaper Times of India on how addressing the hidden burden of infertility in India is essential.

He addresses the challenges of infertility in India and explains that though is a condition that is mostly caused by biological and environmental factors, there is a tendency to internalise it as an individual or personal failure. Misplaced social attitudes like holding women solely responsible for conception or unwillingness to address malefactor infertility add to the burden.

The first step every couple should take is to address the misconceptions that infertility treatment is only for females. Visiting a consultant can help normalise these conversations that IVF is not bad in fact that advancements in the treatments can help couples deliver a healthy baby. There is a comprehensive range of treatments including male infertility treatments, advanced genetic screening, diagnostics, laparoscopic gynecological procedures, and donor services which are now available for patients.
